From an edition of 1000. Colored lithographs. The lithographs in this series were commissioned by the Department of Public Instruction in New South Wales and were published in six volumes from 1887-1891. The lithographs are drawn in a style more closely resembling watercolors than ornithological illustrations. Broinowski (1837-1913) was born in Poland. Rather than join the Russian Imperial Army, he wandered through Europe until 1857 when he left for Australia. For some years he worked as a shepherd and farmer until going to work for a publisher. Ultimately, however, he wanted to paint and wandered up and down the coast painting the towns and villages he visited. He published works on the birds and mammals of Australia and the Cockatoos and Nestors of Australia and New Zealand. His best work, however, was The Birds of Australia. Size (in): 11 x 15
